The state was recently abuzz with speculation that Tengku Razaleigh had joined the opposition camp.
When contacted yesterday, Tengku Razaleigh said he met with the Opposition leaders in his capacity as a statesman. They had sought appointments to see him for discussions over the country's future.
"As a statesman, I am open to meeting all politicians, regardless if they are from Barisan Nasional or Pakatan," he said.
The nation's longest-serving parliamentarian and former finance minister said he wanted all politicians to place the nation above self."This is especially crucial when we have to steer in a storm of political and economic uncertainties, made worse with global issues such as the US financial meltdown," he said.
Tengku Razaleigh, who has announced his intention of going for the Umno presidency, said he had his own plan to steer the country away from political and economic storms.
"I am not looking for a job or power. I am offering leadership so the country can rise to the challenges of a globalised economy," said Tengku Razaleigh, who condemns the Umno leadership's transitional plan as undemocratic.
