CHAN: At a news conference today, Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim is calling for parliament to be convened by next week to hold a vote of no confidence. He's hoping to oust Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and form a new government.
Anwar said he has secured sufficient MP support from the ruling Barisan National Coalition to destroy the parliamentary majority.
On Wednesday Abdullahrefused to meet Anwar. He denied that the 30 parliament members needed by the opposition to form the next government have deserted the ruling coalition. He's calling Anwar's claims a "mirage."
If Anwar's party wins, it will effectively displace a coalition that has ruled Malaysia for over 50 years since its independence from Britain
